The Burnout That Started Everything

In 2020, like millions of professionals, Bounded Self's founder, Lawrence, found himself working from home for the first time in his career as a network security engineer. What started as a temporary arrangement quickly dissolved every boundary between work and life. The burnout crept in slowly, steadily, until the desire to do anything meaningful had all but evaporated.

What followed was a familiar loop: pick up a mindfulness practice, try journaling, experiment with detachment, feel a flicker of control, and then slide right back into the blur. The tools weren't bad. They just weren't solving the actual problem.

From Gut Feeling to Data

The turning point came when Lawrence started tracking his emotional energy in a simple mobile app he built for himself. Nothing revolutionary at first, just logging how activities made him feel over time. But something clicked. Patterns emerged. For the first time, the invisible drain on his capacity became visible and measurable.

Around the same time, he discovered envelope-based budgeting, where every dollar has a job before you spend it. The parallel was impossible to ignore: what if you could allocate emotional energy the same way? Give every unit of energy a purpose before the world spends it for you?

He started testing the concept in a spreadsheet, and the results were undeniable. By budgeting his energy with the same discipline people apply to finances, he could finally focus on what actually mattered to him. It was the same promise that popular budgeting apps had been making for years, just applied to the resource that was actually running out.

Why “Bounded Self”?

The name comes from the economic principle of bounded rationality, the recognition that humans can never be perfectly rational because there is simply too much information to process. Instead, we make the best decisions we can within the boundaries of what we're aware of.

That's exactly what emotional energy tracking is. We can't monitor every signal our body and mind send us. But we can self-report, record, and study the energy we are conscious of, and use that bounded awareness to make better choices about how we live.

What We Believe

Self-awareness is the foundation of lasting change. Most productivity tools focus on output like tasks completed, hours logged, goals crushed. Bounded Self takes a different approach: it starts with how you actually feel, then helps you connect those feelings to what you do.

The result is a clearer picture of what sustains you and what drains you, so you can make informed choices rather than running on autopilot.

Your data is yours. We believe in your right to access your data and your right to be forgotten. Not because regulators require it, but because it's the right thing to do.

Honest pricing, always. We don't hide fees. We don't bury costs. The price you see is the price you pay, taxes included.

Built for the common good. Bounded Self exists to help people reclaim their energy and their lives. That mission comes before everything else.

See where your energy goes.
